This website is about my upcoming physical fitness journey. It's about overcoming a fear and pursuing a dream.
In the late 70’s I was a world class swimmer. I held a World Record at one point, albeit for less than 20 minutes, but a World Record nonetheless. I was a member of the U.S. National Swim Team. My body fat was clinically measured at 3.87%. So yeah, I was in pretty good shape.
A couple years before I retired from competitive swimming the first Ironman Triathlon was run. As I watched an Ironman television broadcast in 1982, a dream began to form and I thought, “I can do that.” Except running that little marathon thing at the end terrified me. I covered my fear by joking, “I would rather be dragged naked through broken glass then run.” My fear and my jokes conspired against me as one year became two and then five. Suddenly decades had gone by and my dream had evaporated like the morning mist. I found myself a hundred pounds overweight; I couldn’t run 400 yards, let alone 26.2 miles.
Then in the late spring of 2011 I went to a friend’s house to diagnose a problem with his computer network. On the wall of his office are photographs showing him crossing the Ironman finish line in Hawaii. Just that fast I realized that my Ironman dream was not gone, it had simply been forgotten.
After thirty years it is time to put the fear behind me. I have set a goal to compete in the Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona Hawaii on October 8, 2016.
Thank you for visiting my website and being a part of my journey.
